Travel Planner

Trips, cost of living, digital nomad visas, and the world map.

How do I plan a trip in Lifeplanr?

Open Travel → Trips → New Trip. Add a name, start/end dates, countries, budget breakdown (flights, accommodation, food, etc.), rating, companions, and photos. When a country has cost-of-living data, you'll see a quick-fill card that populates daily budgets at Backpacker / Mid-Range / Luxury tiers. Trips also show up on your life calendar.

Does the trip planner show local prices?

Yes for 49 countries with cost-of-living data. When you add a country to a trip, the budget section shows inline price hints (local meal, rent, transport) and a one-click quick-fill for three lifestyle tiers. Links out to the full /cost-of-living/[country] breakdown for deeper planning.

Does Lifeplanr help with digital nomad visas?

Indirectly — we publish a research database of 38 countries with dedicated nomad visas at /digital-nomad-visas, covering income requirements, fees, duration, tax rules, and path to residency. The app doesn't submit applications for you, but the data feeds directly into trip-planning decisions.

How does the trip budget system work?

Seven categories: Flights, Accommodation, Food & Drink, Activities, Local Transport, Shopping, Other. Each can be entered as a one-time total, per-day, or per-night — daily costs auto-multiply by trip length. The modal shows running totals and a daily average, so you can calibrate against your real-world spending.

Is there a world map of my trips?

Yes — the Map tab in Travel shows every country you've visited (gold), lived in (green), planned (blue), or wishlisted (purple). Powered by Leaflet with GeoJSON country polygons. Click any country for a detail modal with your trips, notes, and photos.

Can I track countries I've visited without logging a full trip?

Yes — click any country on the map and mark it visited/lived/planned/wishlist. No trip details required. Trip logs automatically update the country status, so most people mark visits loosely and fill in details for memorable trips only.

How many photos can I attach per trip?

10 per trip on free, up to 50 per trip on Pro. Total account photo cap: 50 on free, 500 on Pro. Files up to 2MB each, any common format (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC auto-converted). Drag-drop, click-to-browse, or paste from clipboard.

Does Lifeplanr support multi-country trips?

Yes — add multiple countries to a single trip (e.g., a Balkans loop through Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro). All show on the map, budget covers the whole trip, and the life-calendar band spans the full date range.

Can I share a trip plan with travel companions?

Household mode lets up to 5 members share the same trips. For non-household companions, export the trip as PDF (Pro) and send that. Real-time collaborative trip planning isn't a feature yet — deliberate trade-off while we keep the app personal.

Is there a bucket list or wishlist?

Yes — Travel → Bucket List lets you add destinations, experiences, and travel goals with optional target dates. Items pinned with a year appear on your life calendar as gold stars. Shows up in dashboard 'upcoming' widget too.

Does Lifeplanr show travel statistics?

Yes — Travel → Stats tab: countries visited, total days abroad, total km/miles travelled (rough, based on country centroids), total trip spend, favorite continent, and achievement badges (7 continents, 50 countries, etc.). All derived from your logged trips.

How accurate is the cost-of-living data?

We compile from Numbeo, Expatistan, and local research, refreshed roughly quarterly. Tiers are indicative, not precise — mid-range in Thailand for a digital nomad will differ from a backpacker's budget. Treat the numbers as a starting point, then calibrate against your first week of real spending.

Can I import trips from Google Maps Timeline?

Manual today — Google Takeout exports your Timeline as JSON, but the format is verbose. We're building a simple importer. For now: best to add countries you've visited via the world map (one click per country) which captures most of what Maps Timeline shows.

Can a trip's budget be in a different currency than my main one?

Yes — each trip can override your default currency. Useful when planning a Japan trip in JPY without converting yen prices in your head. The trip total displays in both the trip currency and your default for cross-trip comparisons.

Does Lifeplanr integrate with airlines or flight trackers?

Not directly. Add flight info as text/notes on each trip; the focus is on the personal-meaning side of travel, not booking infrastructure. For booking + tracking, pair Lifeplanr with TripIt or Wanderlog.

Can I share a trip itinerary with someone?

Export trip as PDF (Pro) and share that. Direct share-link with read-only view is on the roadmap. Works well for sharing a trip retrospective with family who weren't there.
